Principal’s News

Dear Parents and Carers,

Parent coffee morning – Years 4-6 ISA student reports
We held a parent coffee morning on Thursday morning this week to outline and explain the ISA student reports that were sent to parents of Year 4-6 students recently. This was a good opportunity to gain an understanding of the assessments and how to interpret the reports. All of the many questions that parents asked were also addressed. Click on the link to see an overview of the coffee morning. Thank you to Brendan Kean, Vice Principal for Years 4-6 for conducting this informative session.

New school hall & assemblies
We officially opened our new school hall last Friday with two student assemblies for Years 1-3 and Years 4-6. Our new hall is a fantastic new facility that serves as a theatre, hall, gym and multipurpose room. The new tiered seating, acoustic fit out, lighting and sound systems are very impressive and will improve the quality of presentations and performances in the hall.

With the new hall open, we will return to our regular schedule of student assemblies as conducted in previous years.  This includes both team assemblies, either years 1-3 or years 4-6, hosted by a nominated year level, as well as whole school/half school assemblies for 2 classes at each year level, conducted by the Student Council.  Our first team assembly is for Years 1-3 next Friday 26th January.  As is the custom, as Year 2 are hosting the assembly, Year 2 parents are invited to attend.  However, due to space restrictions we are unable to invite parents of other year levels.

Plastic free seas donation
Each year the PTA donate 5% of the funds raised at the annual school fair to a charity chosen by the student council. In keeping with the theme of our fair the chosen charity this year was ‘Plastic Free Seas’. Dawn from Plastic Free seas was a guest speaker as part of the unit of inquiry for Year 6 exhibition on Thursday. We took the opportunity to present her with the donation of more than $16,000.00. IT parent information session – Be Internet Awesome
On Tuesday 16th January we held a very well attended parent information session to launch the ‘Be Internet awesome’ program with parents. Results and data from the recent IT survey that more than 200 parents completed were also shared and many of the issues raised by parents were discussed. These included screen time, eyestrain, supervising and monitoring computer use, being safe online and using social media. Thanks to Matt Hayes our ICT coordinator and other members of the ICT School Improvement Team including Robyn Wishart, Andrew Craig, Jennifer Doo and Sally Evans.

Parent information evening – supporting student’s writing
An invitation to a parent information evening being conducted by Dr Misty Adoniou, Associate Professor of language and literacy at the University of Canberra in Australia, was emailed to parents on Thursday. Misty ran a CPD day for us last year and then spent a second day working with staff to improve the teaching of writing. She is returning this year to work with teachers once again in year level teams on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th January. The parent workshop is on Tuesday evening 30th January from 6.30pm so do come along and find out how to support your child’s writing development at home. Please RSVP via the google link contained in the email or below.

Emergency lockdown drill
As part of our Health and Safety policy and procedures we conducted a lockdown drill on Thursday afternoon to ensure we are well prepared in the event of an emergency requiring this type of action. In the days prior to this all teachers briefed students about the purpose and expected behavior during a lockdown to ensure that students were well prepared and knew what to expect so that no unnecessary distress was caused.

Best wishes,

Chris Hamilton

Principal
