Principal’s News

Dear parents and carers

New Staff

Our new Admissions Officer, Ms Gina Chik, commenced work with us last week.  She has been working closely with Maggie Cho over the last few days to ensure a smooth handover.  Maggie is leaving at the end of this week for Australia.

We are also pleased to welcome two new Education Assistants who will start work next week.  Ms Teresa Liang in 1C and Ms Jinan Han in 2W.   Ms Katie Chan will also be joining us from November 1st as a part time EA in 6S.   A big thank you to our supply EA’s Belinda Hui and Julie Anne Tomas for stepping up and helping in 1C and 2W since the beginning of the year.  Ms Jennifer Watson will continue to cover both 6M and 6S until November.

Parent information nights.

We held our beginning of the year, parent information nights for Years 1-3 and Years 4-6 this week.   Many parents took the opportunity to come in and find out about the teaching and learning program for the term/year, as well as to meet their child’s new teacher.

Don’t forget our parent information night next Wednesday 5 September for specialist subjects/teachers from 6.30pm-7.30pm.  This is a good opportunity to find out more about the different specialist subjects such as Chinese, PE, Music, Library, IT and Individual Needs that your child accesses at Clearwater Bay School

My Cultural Story Day

We held our My Cultural Story day on Wednesday.  Once again it was a big success with students sharing information about themselves and their cultural backgrounds and traditions.  Thank you to those parents who came in to share their culture or to read mother tongue stories.  Thanks to all parents for supporting your child on the day enabling us all to get to know each other a little better at CWBS.   This special day also helps to develop students’ intercultural understanding by promoting and valuing the many different cultural backgrounds of students and families in our school community.

Staff Training and CPD

Don’t’ forget that we have a staff CPD day coming up on Friday 7th September.  As usual with whole school CPD days the school is closed for students, so you do need to make alternative care arrangements.

The focus of the day will be on teaching reading with the aim to provide teachers and EAs with the latest up to date research and strategies for teaching reading and promoting reading comprehension for primary students.

Years 4-6 Stationery requirements

Thank you to those parents who have supplied their Year 4-6 child with the stationery items listed on the sheet sent home at the end of last year.  Students need all these stationery items so if you have not already done so please arrange to buy them and send in with your child to use at school.  If you no longer have the list for your child’s year level please contact the front office to obtain another one.  Please also note that stationery is provided for younger students in years 1-3.

Kinder & Year 1 admissions and Year 6 transfer to High School in 2019-20

Parents with young children should note that the ESF admissions timeline for commencing Kindergarten at Abacus or Year 1 at CWBS in the 2019-20 school year is about to commence.  The enrolment period is from September 1 to 30.  Parents with a Year 6 student transferring to an ESF high school in 2019-20 also need to complete the transfer application form, available on Gateway from Monday 3rd September.   The application period is from 3 – 14th September.

ESF CEO visits CWBS
Belinda Greer, ESF Executive visited the school today to talk to all the new staff.  She was also keen to see the new learning resource centre, music room and access centre created over the summer.  She even found time to share a story with some of our new year one students in the book nook!

Kind Regards

Chris Hamilton

Principal

Library News

The Learning Resource Centre formerly known as the Library opened this week. The students were overjoyed to see their new learning space. Some of their comments included:
WOW WOW WOW, AMAZING, THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE,  I WANT TO LIVE HERE,  WONDERFUL, THIS IS MY DREAM!!!!!
The reconfigured environment has a lighter and more spacious feel with a mini auditorium, book nooks and areas for touch screen search computers and self circulation desks.
We are looking forward to whole classes, small groups and individuals enjoying their new surroundings.

Mother Tongue Club Story Sessions

At CWBS we are spoilt with a wonderful range of nationalities that our community represents.

To support our students in their mother tongue, we run story reading sessions in a variety of languages.  If you are free on a Friday during lunch time 12:20pm-1:00pm and would be interested in reading a story to students in your home language, please email me with the Friday of your choice during the Term.
