Principal’s News

Dear Parents,

A sincere thank you to all those parents who were able to join us at the PTA AGM on Monday evening. There was a high turnout of over 40 parents, and significant interest in becoming a member of the PTA committee, with many new parents joining this group. Thank you to the PTA for leading the meeting and for their ongoing support of students and families at CWBS. Please see the PTA News section of the newsletter for further details.

In this week’s newsletter:

  • Learning Conferences
  • Box of Hope
  • Medical Update
  • Camps – Y4/5/6
  • PYP – Sharing the Planet

Learning Conferences

Prior to the half term break, students, teachers and parents were able to connect via Zoom to discuss each child’s learning and wellbeing over the first half term. Despite the T8 day delaying some of the meetings, there was a very high percentage of families attending these valued conversations. Teachers described these conferences as being very positive experiences, with clear benefits for our learners. Thank you parents for your support.

Box of Hope

Following on from our successful support of the Redress NGO last month, we are now aiming to support the ‘Box of Hope’ charity. This group aims to support underprivileged children in Asia, and will this year take place as an online donation rather than item collection as in previous years. Thank you in advance to any families able to support this action.

Outdoor Education Month

The sustainability theme at CWBS for the months of November-December will be focused on outdoor education.

CWBS has been entered into a citywide contest where we are competing against other schools in the city by taking photos of and identifying different species of plants and animals using an app called iNaturalist. The students will be using the app at school, as only photos within the boundaries of our school will be entered into the contest. We encourage students to also try out the app at home to practice taking photos and identifying different species in their own neighbourhoods. Please view this slideshow for more information about iNaturalist and the contest.

Medical Update

A warm reminder that at this time, it is important to take a vigilant approach to student health and wellbeing. Students with an infectious disease, or with any symptoms of one, such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, should rest at home and not be sent to school. If a student develops these symptoms at school, the parent/guardian will be asked to pick the student up from school and it is recommended by CHP that the student seeks medical advice.

Camps – Y4/5/6

School camps are an important part of the school program at CWBS in terms of the opportunities they provide, the personal growth they support, and the memories they create.  Since making the decision to postpone camp week, we have worked with our partner organisations and have managed to reschedule our camps for Term 3 this year.

The dates below are tentative and dependent on ability to proceed in a safe and appropriate way.  We will continue to monitor the health situation in Hong Hong, and we will look for alternative options to provide a ‘camp’ style experience for our students if overnight camps are not able to proceed.

PYP – Year 1 Sharing the Planet

Year 1 students have just commenced inquiring into the theme of sharing the planet “plants are a life sustaining resource for living things”. They have started to discuss research skills and how they can ask questions to find out information. They have been observing living and non living things. Throughout the unit they will discover and explore what plants need to grow and how they are a life sustaining resource through planting in the school microgarden.

Box of Hope

Over the last few years the students at CWBS have supported the charity Box of Hope. Last Christmas we collected over 500 boxes which were distributed to underprivileged children in Asia.

This year Box of Hope will be asking for donations from the 1st November instead.

These donations will help deliver boxes made from their current stock to local children in Hong Kong. They will also be used to buy extra goods, food parcels and supermarket vouchers. Please do not send in any boxes this year.

Thank you in advance for helping us make 2020 another successful year.  These boxes give such joy to so many children and given how tough 2020 is proving for so many people, these boxes are needed more than ever.

Respiratory infection alert issued

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today urged the public to stay vigilant against upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) as an increasing number of institutional URTI outbreaks has been recorded recently. Majority of the outbreaks occurred in primary schools and followed by kindergartens/ child care centers. As schools are collective assembly places, infectious diseases could easily spread among people through daily contacts. In order to prevent outbreaks of respiratory tract infection including COVID-19, it is of prime importance that children with a fever should not go to school and must consult doctors promptly. Students with a fever or respiratory illness should refrain from going to school and seek medical attention immediately. Please report to School Nurse for any confirmed respiratory tract infection with a doctor note.

School Medical Policies

To keep our student body at CWBS as healthy as possible, certain medical policies have been put in place to avoid the spread of communicable diseases.

  • Fever Policy:  Students with a temperature of 37.5°C or greater, should remain away from school until they are fever free for 48 hours without any antipyretic medication such as Panadol or Ibuprofen (Nurofen, Advil).
  • Infectious Diseases Policy:  Students with vomiting and/or diarrhea should remain away from school until 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Head Lice Policy: If any head lice and/or nits are noted in school, students will be sent home and they can return to school once treatment has been applied and he/ she is free from lice. On the day that student is ready to return to school, please bring him/her to the nurse office for a final checkup before going to class. Our policies are based on the guidelines and recommendations provided by the Centre for Health Protection and the Education Bureau of Hong Kong. These policies are enforced to protect the health of the students and staff at CWBS.
