Principal’s News

Dear Parents,

As we end this eventful half term together, I am pleased to report a positive final week at school. Despite Tuesday’s T8 day, students have been happily learning, and we have been very pleased to connect with students and parents during our learning conferences.

Looking ahead, I hope that everyone has a wonderful half term break, and is able to relax and enjoy time with family. A reminder that due to the public holiday for Chung Yeung festival, the first day back at school after the break will be Tuesday 27th October 2020.

In this week’s newsletter:

  • Learning Conferences
  • Parent Survey – Distance Learning – Results
  • Student Grant Application – 2020-21
  • Sustainability – Redress Month
  • PTA – upcoming AGM
  • House Captains
  • PYP – Transdisciplinary Themes

Learning Conferences

Thank you to all families for supporting our learning conference conversations this week. Attendance was high. Teachers have spoken very positively about the chance to connect with students and families and reflect on the learning thus far this year. We value student voice at CWBS. The learning conferences are an example of how involving students in reflecting on their own learning builds motivation and ownership.

Parent Survey – Distance Learning – Results

Thank you to all parents who completed the CWBS Distance Learning Survey earlier this term. We greatly value this feedback, which will help inform our future provision. The results of the survey were positive, and can be viewed here in detail.

Student Grant Application – 2020-21

For students who have applied for the EDB grant at CWBS last year, a pre-printed form has been mailed to your address indicated on Gateway. Please expect the form to arrive in your mail in the next couple of days. Please check that all information on the form is correct, check the box at the bottom and sign the form, and return the original to the school office/class teacher. If you have not received the form by the end of next week, you can also download Form A and complete and return the form to us.

For new students who have not applied for the grant at CWBS before (students joined after February 2020), please download Form A and complete all the fields and return the original form to the school office/class teacher. Hard copies are also available for collection at the school office.

Please return the form to us by Wednesday 28 October 2020. Late forms will be accepted but there will be delay in processing the grant transfer.

Sustainability – Redress Month

This month is Redress month where we are supporting the NGO Redress by participating in school events. The first event was the story competition where students submitted stories about their oldest or favourite piece of clothing. These submissions were fantastic to read and will be sent to Redress next week for the competition. On Friday 30th of October students will be able to dress down in reused, recycled, or repaired clothing in order to raise money for the NGO.

PTA AGM – Monday 2nd November 2020 6pm

All parents and teachers are invited to join the annual PTA AGM on Monday 2nd November 2020 at 6pm in the school hall. This important annual event will be taking place in person in order to comply with legal requirements of the PTA operations. The AGM will be run in accordance with EDB/CHP guidelines in order to support community health and safety.   Please see PTA news below for further information.

House Captains

On Thursday Belinda Greer, ESF CEO, met with our House Captains. During the discussion students were able to share their ideas about the role House Captains will play during the upcoming year, as well as speaking about their own motivation and hopes. It was a very positive meeting and students expressed their thoughts and ideas beautifully.

PYP -Transdisciplinary Themes

The transdisciplinary themes are the starting point of student inquiries. It is within the context of each theme that students explore related central ideas and aligned knowledge. These themes engage the learning community in rich dialogues and ongoing collaboration to build an understanding of themselves, their wider community and the world. Designed to have enduring value regardless of the geography or background of IB World Schools and students, the six themes provide guidance for what students will inquire into IB, (2018).

Have a lovely break everyone. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday 27th October.

This important annual event will be taking place in person in order to comply with legal requirements of the PTA operations. The CWBS PTA provides invaluable support to our school community. Although the challenges of 2020 have reduced opportunities for activities, the CWBS PTA has a rich tradition of social events and fundraisers that have enriched the lives of community members and provided the students of the school with wonderful resources and experiences beyond those provided by centralised funding. Going forward, the PTA is committed to supporting the school, and the upcoming AGM is an important step forwards in partnership with the school. Please support the school and PTA by attending.

Please read the PTA letter linked here, with details of the event. We look forward to welcoming you on Monday 2nd November.
