Principal’s News

Welcome

Thank you for your ongoing support during this period of distance learning. It has been another busy week at school, with parent information evenings, resource collection and live lessons with specialists in PE, Music, ICT and Library beginning. We hope that students have enjoyed their learning time with their specialist teachers.

Parent Information Evenings

Thank you to all those families who were able to join us for this week’s parent information evenings. Although we were unable to welcome families into school in person, it was nonetheless good to see everyone online and have the chance to introduce ourselves and share plans.

We hope the sessions were useful to parents. If you were unable to join these presentations, please use the links below to access the slides from the year teams. We continue to welcome feedback around our distance learning program and will seek to connect with parents whenever questions arise.

My Cultural story day

My Cultural Story day will be held on Friday 4 September. Students will take part in learning engagements, with the key focus celebrating the diversity in our school and for students to get to know each other’s cultural backgrounds and experiences.  Many of our students are bilingual or multilingual and this will be an opportunity for them to celebrate and share.

Resource Collection

We hope that today’s resource collection has proven useful for families. If you were not able to make collection at the times listed, or if you have any other questions, please contact our office manager, Ms Ada Chan ada.chan@cwbs.edu.hk.

Device Loans

To support families with more than one student, it is possible to borrow a device from school during the period of distance learning. Please contact our educational assistant for ICT, Ms Grace Chan, on grace.chan@cwbs.edu.hk to request this. Requests will be managed in order of receipt, and according to the finite availability of devices.

Distance Learning

Distance learning provision continues to evolve. We hope that children have enjoyed their first lessons with specialists this week. PE, Music, Library and ICT teachers have enjoyed connecting with the students. We encourage students to participate in all aspects of the distance learning provision. It is important that students engage with the learning tasks and submit these, such that teachers can then provide feedback to support learning.

We are of course, however, mindful of screen time during this period, and will be monitoring and reviewing the provision in response to staff and parent feedback. Should you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please contact us. We appreciate that all families are in different circumstances, and respect parents’ right to manage their child’s time online in the way they feel most appropriate.

School accounts for personal purposes

CWBS provides a range of school online accounts and resources to support students’ learning at school and at home.  This includes a range of communication and collaboration tools, as well as access to digital resources and learning portals.

We have disabled student access to Google Hangouts as this platform cannot currently be appropriately monitored. We will be investigating alternative platforms to support learning and collaboration.

We understand that students wish to connect with their peers during the school suspension beyond the ‘check-in and ‘check-out’ times, and virtual lessons.  Students are welcome to do this using their families’ personal accounts and under parent supervision.

Specialist Teachers Information Night – Wednesday 2nd September

This year, our specialist teacher information session will be online. This will take place on Wednesday 2nd September from 6.30-7.30pm as a Zoom webinar for all year groups. The session will be an opportunity to hear from our specialist teachers and find out more about the learning for your child in these curriculum areas, including Chinese, Music, PE, Library and Individual Needs. Please see below for the link to this online session. We hope you are able to join us.

PYP-Concepts

The seven key concepts help to give inquiries direction and meaning.  They are designed as the lens or the “big picture” through which we look at our lines of inquiry.

When we focus on key concepts within each unit, we are able to bring the focus of the children’s thinking to a deeper level rather than shallow and broad. The key concepts are constantly visited and revisited as children’s understanding develops and deepens as they progress through the PYP.

“The concepts that drive the PYP are timeless (factual examples change, but not the core understanding), universal (so students can apply understandings across cultures, situations and disciplines) and abstract (so students engage in higher order thinking to grapple with central ideas).”
