Principal’s News

Dear Parents,

We have been very proud of our learners this week.

Y1, 2, and 3 teachers have spoken positively of how our younger students have coped with the transition back to distance learning. They have engaged well both in small groups and whole classes, with Y1 students exploring story mountains, and retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Y2 students have been exploring transport systems, and will soon begin personal inquiries into systems of their own interest. Our Y3 students are nearing the end of their ‘Where we are in place and time unit’, having explored how people lived in the past.

Although it has been quiet at school without our younger learners, the older students have filled the school with their enthusiasm for learning. In year 4, classes have been focused on developing their skills for writing effective diary entries, using their dramatic flair to act out sequences. In year 5, students have spent time exploring what makes advertisements effective, and learning how they are filmed. Year 6 has also been a hive of activity, with students reaching the final week of their inquiry into ‘Where we are in place and time’. They have been using their creative thinking skills to design and make a whole range of exciting inventions, as you can see below.

We hope to see Y1, 2 and 3 students back in school in a week’s time, on Monday 6th December, and trust that today’s resource collection was useful for families.

Full Days at School – Application Update

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we have submitted an application and are continuing to work with the Education Bureau (EDB) to gain approval for having students at school for full days. However, we have been informed that EDB has closed their approval process temporarily and, as a result, we will not be able to move to full days at the moment.

You may be aware that some ESF schools have been able to gain approval for full days. This is merely a timing issue (approved before the process was suspended) and we expect to gain approval for full day school as soon as the process is re-opened. We expect that this may not happen until the start of Term 2.

Medical Update

Please continue to prioritise your child’s health at this time. If students are unwell, please keep them at home. Further advice is included below in the Medical News section. Please contact our school nurse if you have questions about your child’s health.

Box of Hope

A reminder that we are now supporting the ‘Box of Hope’ charity. This group aims to support underprivileged children in Asia, and is taking place this year as an online donation (via their website www.boxofhope.org) rather than item collection as in previous years. Thank you in advance to any families able to support this action.

PYP

Year 6 – Where we are in place and time

With the work of Zaria Forman as inspiration, year 6 students used their pastel skills to show the beauty and fragility of the Earth. Through their artwork, they hope to encourage people to protect and preserve our landscapes.

With the focus of their central idea that inventions evolve when needs and opportunities stimulate creativity, year 6 students have been working on their summative assessment. Classes have followed the design process to create an invention which solves a problem or makes life easier. There has been some very innovative work across all classes. Below are some pictures of students engaged in construction, developing their skills and ideas.

It is appreciated that the mixed nature of this week, with some students at home and others at school, will have presented scheduling and other challenges for families. Should you have any feedback about the distance learning provision for Y1-3 students, please do feel free to contact a member of the leadership team.

Have a lovely weekend.

Medical News

Medical Advice

A warm reminder that at this time, students should only attend school if they are symptom free. Students with fever of >37.5 forehead skin temp, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, headache, muscle aches, generalised malaise should rest at home and not be sent to school. If a student develops these symptoms at school, the parent/guardian will be asked to pick the student up from school and it is recommended by CHP that the student seeks medical advice.

Health Monitoring

We have an ongoing responsibility to monitor absences and sickness. Please continue to let us know if your child is ill in any way by emailing Nurse Teresa with a description of symptoms (nurse@cwbs.edu.hk). Also, if your child has seen a doctor and been confirmed with an illness, please send a copy of the doctor’s note.
