Principal’s News

Dear parents

Camps

Our Year 5 camp is planned to go ahead next week from Tuesday to Thursday at Treasure Island on Lantau.    We certainly hope for fine weather so students can participate in the usual range of activities, including surfing, raft building and beach activities.  The weather is obviously a little cooler than 3 weeks ago but we have been assured by Treasure Island staff that the water temperature is still acceptable, though we will obviously monitor weather conditions on the day and decide accordingly.

Year 3 excursion to Sheung Yiu Folk Museum

As part of the unit  ‘Where we are in place and time’ the rescheduled Year 3 trip to the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum went ahead on Wednesday 27th  in perfect weather.   Students enjoyed the 20 minute walk in to the village from the Country Park entrance.  On arrival at the former Wong family house they were treated to an informative talk by Mr Wong, a volunteer interpretative guide.   Students also had time to explore each of the various rooms containing a range of artefacts and informative displays.

Box of Hope

Students in 5J recently coordinated the collection of Christmas gift boxes for ‘Box of Hope’.  This is a registered charity that collects Christmas gift boxes to donate to orphans and less privileged children throughout asia.   This year, in spite of the suspension of classes for several days, we collected 220 boxes.  Well done CWBS and thanks to 5J and Ms Craggs.

Winter concert arrangements

We have had to change our plans for the end of term winter concerts due to the recent suspension of classes.  Some of the performance groups have not had sufficient rehearsal time to be able to present multiple items at an evening winter concert, so we have cancelled this event.  Instead the groups that do have at least one item ready to perform will join our Christmas concert on Thursday 12 December from 8.45am-9.45am on the downstairs playground.  This Christmas concert will include  Year 1 and Year 2 choral performing as well as an item or two from the Junior and Senior Choirs and the Chinese drumming group and orchestra.  Parents are most welcome to join us to enjoy the performances.

Reports

Students’ mid year written reports will be available online from Wednesday 11 December.   ESF have moved our reports from the Parent Gateway to a new online platform his year.  Further details will be forthcoming in the near future.

Staffing update

We have filled two positions for the next school year 2020-21, where staff gave early notice of their intention to leave.   Ms Wendy Egan is returning home to Australia for family reasons and her position as Literacy & Numeracy Coach / PYP coordinator for Years 4-6 is being taken by Ms Helen Read who is a current Year 4 teacher at the school.  Ms Angela Barwell our long serving librarian is also returning to the UK at the end of the year and Ms Janine Hudson has accepted the position as our new teacher librarian.  Janine is currently Head of library Services at St Stanislaus College in Bathurst, Australia.

The recruitment process to find a new principal for the next academic year was conducted from Monday 18 – Wednesday 20th November with the final 3 candidates visiting the school on Tuesday 19th November.  They met with separate panels of teachers, support staff, the Senior Leadership Team and parents.  Each candidate also gave a community presentation in the afternoon on the topic CWBS 2025.   Following a final interview on Wednesday 20 at ESFC,  Mr Michael Dewey , the current Vice Principal at Quarry Bay School has been appointed to the position commencing in the next academic year, from August 2020.
