Dear parents
My cultural story day
One of the special things about CWBS is the variety of nationalities and cultural backgrounds we have in our school community. As mentioned in our last newsletter we aim to develop internationally minded students. For the My Cultural Story Day on Friday 30 August students came to school dressed to represent the culture/s that are important to them.
They shared stories in class of their identity, learnt about the languages spoken by each other and throughout the school and appreciated the variety of different cultures that we all come from. We continuously work towards our students appreciating and valuing the diversity of the wide variety of different cultures we have at CWBS. A big thank you to those parents who come in and shared part of their cultural background to enrich the learning of students on the day.
Annual Levy for 2019-20
The annual levy for trips and excursions has been calculated in consultation with year level teaching teams and previous history. An email has been sent to all parents advising this year’s levy. The levy is typically kept to less than $500 if possible, with the rate being different for new and existing parents based on any surplus rolled up from last year.
New staff appointments
We recently appointed a couple of new Education Assistants and a new Admissions Officer who are all starting in September. Our new Chinese Language Education Assistant, Ms Luomeng Chao started work last week on Monday 2 September working with Mr Dong. Our new Admissions Officer, Ms Ellie Lo starts next Monday 16 September, whilst our new Music EA, Ms Kristy Kwan commences the following week on Monday 23 September. We welcome them all to CWBS and look forward to working with them through the year. We are also currently advertising another Chinese language Education Assistant position which we hope to finalise by the mid term break. Ms Amanda Xu has resigned and will be leaving on 27th September. We thank her for her work at CWBS and wish her well for the future.
School Uniform Update
Last year ESF was advised of new Hong Kong Education Bureau procurement regulations that preclude individual schools or PTAs contracting for the provision of services to students or the school. Contracts can only be held by the overall governing body, such as ESF. As a result we have had to give notice to end the contract with our current uniform supplier at the end of term 2 and will be moving to the ESF centralised uniform supplier from the beginning of term 3. This will be an online ordering and payment system, with items delivered to your home address. The PTA will hold samples of each item in different sizes so that you are able to come in and try on items and sizes prior to placing an online order, should you wish to do so.
As part of the transition to a new uniform supplier the current supplier will be discounting all stock by 30-40% from the 1st October in order to reduce stock levels by the end of term 2 when their contract finishes. The uniform shop’s opening hours are also being extended in October and November to include an extra day of opening on Thursdays from 8.00am-4.00pm. This is in addition to the regular opening day of Monday which will continue as usual.
Please note that in the change to a new uniform supplier we anticipate very little change in the actual uniform though there may be some slight differences in styles and fabrics (this is still being finalised). In any case we have allowed a minimum 2 year transition period between the old and new uniforms.

Message from the CWBS Office
This is a reminder to all parents about arriving late, picking up a child early and notifying the school of a student’s absence.
Late Arrival
If your child arrives at school after 8:30am, they must come to the office to sign in.
Early Pick Up
If you are picking up your child early, whether it’s for an appointment, family event or from the nurse, parents are required to go to the front office to sign their child out.
These procedures are in place to ensure that students’ attendance records are accurate and up to date. Records often need to be cross checked for school bus, after school activities, and in emergency situations.
Absence
If your child is sick or attending other matters which will make them absent for the day, it is important that the parents inform the school by email ( info@cwbs.edu.hk ) or phone (2358 3221). Parents need to provide the reason for being absent (sick, family, tournament etc) and if the child is sick please let us know the symptoms. The school is required to notify the Health Department should we notice a pattern of certain illness.

Mother Tongue Story Sessions (Friday Lunchtimes. 12.20pm-1pm)
At CWBS we are spoilt with the range of nationalities that our community represents. To support our students in their mother tongue, we have in previous years run weekly story reading & activity sessions in a variety of languages. If you are free on Fridays during a lunch time this term from 12:20pm-1:00pm and would be interested in reading a story/activity to students in your home language, please email me to be added to the roster.
Many thanks to all volunteers who have already registered.
Thank you for your support.
